Sisters Embark on Safari to Help Orphans of AIDS Pandemic

by Patricia Lonergan  published in the East Ottawa Journal

Christine and Lynne

When it comes to working up a sweat on the treadmill both Christine Newport and her sister, Lynne Perrault, have recently traded in their running shoes in favour of a sturdy pair of hiking boots.

The pair wants to break in their new footwear before joining six others in Kenya for a 12-day, 110-mile hike along game trails in Tsavo National Park this March. Considered Africa’s wildest and longest foot safari, The Great Walk of Africa is a fundraiser to benefit children orphaned by AIDS in east Africa.
“It’s a great idea to raise funds and, at the same time, I get to walk in a national park,” says Newport, who learned about the event from an acquaintance.

A total of eight participants will be led along the courses of the Tsavo and Galana rivers and through big game country in the explorers’ style. Walking through the mornings and resting when the heat hits its peak, hikers will leave the conveniences of the modern world behind.

It’s not the physical challenge that concerns the sisters, who live very active lives. It’s the emotional toll the journey will have that has both worried. During their trip, the participants will visit a slum in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, as well as an orphanage housing children whose parents died of HIV/AIDS.

February 1, 2008

Sincere Appreciation to all our Contributors and Participants at the January 26th, 2008 dinner-auction and live blues concert fundraising event at St Anthony's Soccer Hall, for helping us make this event a huge success.  Special thanks goes to our family and friends who overwhelmed us with their support and hard work, rallying to help raise donations, contributions and sell tickets.  You know who you are and we love you dearly.

Mel BrownMel Brown and the Homewreckers, with Miss Angel delighted everyone with their musical stylings and talented vocPeacework Jan 26 08als.  Peacework Accoustic Duo, Scott Arena and Maren Molthan, also entertained the crowd with their talented live blues.  Little Chicago Studios provided professional sound, making both these groups sound fabulous. What a great night of live blues!

Special thanks goes to James and Diane Doran of Blues on the Rideau for all their guidance and support.  We would have been lost without their help.  Wendy Tomlinson of Optimum Travel also merits our gratitude for her unbelievable contribution to not only this event, but for the assistance and contribution to our travel plans to Africa this coming March.  St Anthony's is a great venue with great food.  Harry Pratt of Pratt Realtors did a fantastic job getting everyone involved in the auction.  Ken Newport kept us on track mc'ing the event. It is the support of many that makes an event like this such a resounding success.  This is clearly reflected in the numbers.

Our overall goal was to raise $10,000.00.  This event raised a whopping $15,500.00.  Unbelievable!!  We are still speechless.  Our total fundraising efforts todate have raised over $21,000.00.  These funds will go directly to help the orphans of Kenya through the programs implemented and run by Global Alliance for Africa.  If you'd like to see just how this money will assist the orphans, go to www.globalallianceafrica.org

We leave soon for our 110 mile safari walk.  Return often and check out our blog section for updates on our progress.

A huge thank you to everyone.

Lynne and Christine

There comes a time in everyone’s life when they finally look outward and ask themselves the humanitarian question, “What difference am I making in the world around me?”

Life has to mean more than the day-to-day fixations of paying the bills, doing the laundry or answering the daily question of “What’s for dinner tonight?”

We soon realize that many on this globe would love to have these mundane preoccupations. Sadly though there are far too many who are instead asking themselves, “When will I eat next?” or worse, “How will I feed my child?”
